A realistic historical fiction novel that spans through almost a century. The novel explores how the wars of the bourgeoisie, the notion of independence and the greed for power come together to affect the lives of two simple 10-year-old's living in the rural areas of Pakistan. All the institutions - family, religion, government - demand to be obeyed, so read as this tragic novel traverse's Ali and Ishaq's journey through life and the decisions they make.
"How can they say we're independent" Ali asked as he saw the bulding crumble to ashes and the last of the flames extinguish along with the last of his tears "when all we have is them?"
"I don't know Ali. I don't know." Ishaq replied as he held back a sob. His knees gave up.
