“Things that fall,” she began, reciting one of my favorite poems, “petals, teardrops, snowflakes, rain. Stars when they lose their shine and tides when they return home. Eyelids when the moon rises and time when we don’t cherish it.” My eyes were closed in appreciation, listening to her soothing voice. “Shadows, leaves, the sun, and I, for you.”
“I’ve fallen for you, El.”

I thought about him. I thought about what this was doing to him. I thought about how he was going to pull through this. I thought about whether or not he was going to find that happiness within himself that I had only known for such a short time before everything that was going well in his life betrayed him.
