Misty Waterflower is a 17 year old girl who is living the hard life in Sinnoh. 
Her mom is dead, her dad is always sick, and her sisters can't seem to hold down a job.
When her choir decides to travel to Kanto for a singing competition, Misty goes with them. She's always wanted to go to Kanto where her mom died.
After the competition is over, she decides to stay there in Kanto and work to send money back home to her family.
But her visa is going to expire soon and if she doesn't get a new one, she'll be deported back to Sinnoh and banned from ever coming to Kanto again before she can find her moms grave.

Ash Ketchum, a 17 year old boy living in Kanto, doesn't have it any better. 
He is running out of money and if he doesn't think of something fast, he won't be able to send money for his cousins school.
