It's just another regular Gathering, good food, good people, old friends reunited. Something Will and Halt look forward too every year.
Then something happens that changes everything.
Now Will is forced to run for Araluen, towing a wounded Corps behind him, with an old and extremely dangerous enemy nipping at his heels, completely alone.
Without Halt.
Meanwhile, Halt struggles with a personal decision, hunting the enemy. New discoveries are made, and even more danger unfolds, and suddenly the whole Ranger Corps is threatened with extinction. Can Will get everyone to safety, including himself? And can Halt find out what's going on before it's too late?

She has gone into hiding as Catherine Altright for the past few weeks in Anselm itself until she earns enough money to travel to Redmont. All seemed well when she met Will again and he ends up falling in love with her secret identity. At first, it seemed like they were going to have a happy relationship. Until someone decided to take Alyss away from Will. Now Will has to save her, Halt has to keep his mouth shut about Catherine being Will's supposedly late wife and Alyss has to postpone the fact that she has to die by the same thing that was supposed to take her. Fire. Will Halt and Will be able to save Alyss in time? Will Halt be able to keep his mouth shut until Alyss tells Will? These questions will be answered as you read.
