The time was in the climax of the battle for homosexuality. It was the worst time to come out. People were threatened, beat, even killed. It was like the civil rights movement, but for sexuality. Jean and Marco were an open couple, they just didn't flaunt it out as much. Yeah, they got called faggots or disgusting or sinners, sometimes get stuff thrown at them, but Jean loves Marco too much to care. Marco never was too affectionate, but as things worsened it the movement, he started showing affection less and less. He'd cut kisses short, not hug as much, pull his hand away when Jean tried to hold it. It didn't bother Jean too much until Marco barely showed him love at all. Even inside the house.
