The first of an epic three-part series of plays chronicling the tragic life of Alfred de Montaigne, Duke of Richmond during a fictional Reformation England.

The year is 1575. King Theodore II, intolerant in his old age, has caused instability in England by enforcing a strict Puritan regime. When Alfred's servant and de facto father, Sir Ronald Joyce, is burned for heresy, there seems little left for him in the world. Yet, events take a turn when one of his friends offer him an opportunity he has not considered nor dared consider to right his wrongs and achieve his desires: a meeting with Satan.
