From day one he knew exactly what was expected of him. As a demon born with a type of one of the four horsemen, it was no secret that the next ninety years or so of his life would be meticulously planned out so that he could be sold. If he didn’t prove strong enough to survive until thirty, he would be thrown away as fodder. If he made it, then he would be sold as a showcase, a trophy to demonstrate the immense wealth of his new owner, so rich that they could buy a horsemen demon as a prize.
If he wasn’t sold by ninety, he would be let loose to fend for himself in the outside world, where he would likely be killed within the first few days. Not many demons survived without a pack of their own, and not many packs wanted a rogue demon. Often too much trouble to deal with, so they would kill the rogue.
It was the life that Xeredahl was destined to live. His entire life from the day he was born consisted of three options, and none of them were up to him to decide.

Every year, my town chooses a sacrifice for the demon that "watches over" our home. In exchange for a person from the village between the ages of 17 to 25, the demon protects our village. And because of that pact, our village is protected for the next year, under the demon's watchful eyes. No one knows what happens to those who the demon chooses, but there's a lot of theories about it. One is that the demon eats or absorbs those who are chosen - another, that it kills them. But this year, I'm the one who's chosen. I get to meet the demon I've feared since I was a child, and now that I'm 24, and am considered an adult, I could have left the village behind. But I didn't. Something inside me told me to stay. Now, I'm going to die. I just know it. I can't leave now, or run away, because the town would be unprotected for a whole year, and that's where my family lives. You let it all out regardless if your superior limited your every move. Now what would an old friend do in such a situation now that you guys are way off from a chance of redeeming any bond? The wheel of fate tries to find balance in between a on-going war. A demon with a demon slayer, nonetheless a Hashira at that; this violates code on both sides that were either written or just common sense. When attempting to work it out, you find each other to have a hard time even making it possible. Making the situation worse the longer you bond after lost time.
