It's been 5 years after the war. Harry and Ron are Aurors and Hermione has worked her way up the Ministry ladder and is now the head of Muggle department. Ron and Hermione went out for six months after Voldemort's defeat, but decided that they weren't going to work out.
For years Hermione has felt that she is missing something, that something, or someone, was missing.
