All elves get presents when they are born. Normally humans get presents such as little baby clothes. But elves are not humans, they get animals that represent each part of their personality. 

Normally elves get two animals which are usually  a white tiger to represent strength, and a parrot to represent beauty. Marigold gets a white tiger, a deer, a monkey, a parrot, two horses, and three pandas.
When the war turns Marigold and her boyfriends family against each other Marigold gets a startling surprise and meets a handsome stranger.
