On the surface Edward Cartwright leads a privileged life, his family are wealthy, his mother loves him and his sisters and he constantly travels the country, occasionally popping over the channel. But take a step back and you realise that's not because he's a bored gentleman... his father simply hates him and with no profession to help him along there's nothing to do but to wait for something to happen.
