Niall Horan was your typical not too popular, but not necessarily a nerd either kind of high school kid. He had a lot of people he hung around regularly and around 3 to 4 close friends. Harry Styles, again, was your typical high school kid, with the exception that he was one of those stereotypical popular guys. y'know, shit ton of friends and all up himself. He didn't bully other kids like most expect jocks like him to do, no he was just a clumsy idiot to be honest.

Niall and Harry didn't ever cross paths really, there was no need for them to. Harry was in year twelve - a year above Niall - and in another block of students so they never had any reason to interact. That was until they got assigned as partners on a school camp.
