The word 'atom' was named using two Greek words, 'a' and 'tom'. The word 'a' means 'non' and 'tom' means cuttable. The atom was thus named so, because western scientist believed that an atom was the smallest particle possible. Years later western science learnt that atoms were actually 'cuttable' as they consisted of sub-atomic particles (electron, proton & neutrons).
