Hazel Parker, a 11 year old girl lives with her young Uncle Jake who has never really raised a child but has to when Hazels parents die in a car accident. Jake is a constructionist and is new to child care. When Hazel is having problems she goes to Jake for advise and Jake tells her to try to fit in with them and try to do what they to and try hard to make them your friends and be at the top, but when the kids who are giving her a hard time sneak to the house that is being built and Hazel goes with them. When Hazel is told by the kids to prove she's brave and climb the construction site she does so, but when it starts to rain like crazy and her hands start to slip, Hazels fear and unstableness gets the best of her, Hazel falls high above the ground and becomes paralyzed. In this story this girl can no longer feel anything below the waste, and her love for running and use of her feet is crushed.
