Frank Iero wasn't a normal teenager.
Gerard Way wasn't either.
Frank was emotionally unstable, Frank was suicidal, Frank was paranoid, Frank was just having trouble with his own life. At first, Frank thought he had some sort of schizophrenia, since he would talk to himself from time to time but it turns out he wasn't right. He just made up scenarios that weren't real what so ever.
When Frank was 17, he was one of the victims in the car accident where his parents got killed. His father was the cause of it due to being drunk. One year later, after all the hell he'd been going through, he decided that living with his Aunt was a better idea than staying in New York.
Frank didn't know that Gerard and himself were going to be in the same school again after all these years.

People thought that Gerard Way was sort of 'crazy' in the mind. Well, Gerard thought he was perfectly fine. Of course he was going to think that. He wasn't an 'insane' crazy, no, he just had a disorder that made him somewhat different from the crowd, right along with Frank.
Gerard had a Borderline Personality Disorder which caused him to have sudden mood changes every second at random times of the day.
Gerard was a compulsive liar too. He lied to his parents, to his brother, to his friends, and most importantly, to Frank.
He bullied Frank only to cover up all the lies he felt towards him over all the years they knew each other. It was either hurting Frank or hurting himself; hurting the people he loved or doing illegal drugs.
But Frank didn't do anything about it, he just let it happen. He couldn't control Gerard, but he sure as hell could control himself to prevent Gerard from doing that.
But one thing was constantly on Franks' mind that made him scared of Gerard in the first place:
Did Gerard really love Frank like he said he has or did he just use him for something else?
Frank didn't even know. He didn't even trust Gerard anymore, let alone himself.

But, their differences don't keep them apart considering these strangers are forced into each other's lives when Gerard finds Frank attempting to commit suicide.
