"What more could go wrong?" was a common phrase that poor, fourteen-year-old Joey would say. The sad part was, that phrase was actually pretty accurate. Joey's life was, in fact, a big disaster. And he knew it. At the age of five, Joey's dad died from a severe and tragic brain tumor. The next year his mom was remarried. Eventually, his mom walked out on him, his four brothers, and his step-dad. Their family moved into a random place in Texas called Marfa, a place many haven't even heard of. When they first moved there, Joey considered himself socially awkward and has been ever since. No friends, no girls, no mom, no 'real' dad. It kind of stunk.

"I'm sorry, James. The tests were positive. You have cancer," the doctor said. In that moment, I felt my entire world crumble. Everything I knew, everything I loved, I would have to say goodbye to. How was this even fair? I'm 23 years old, I haven't lived yet, haven't experienced much, and yet I was going to die. I might have just given up completely if it wasn't for her. She is the only reason I am still alive, yet she can't know of my disease. She can't know anything. I just have to pretend that everything is going to be okay before I have to say goodbye, before I run out of time.
