I WANTED TO GIVE UP, TO LET THEM HAVE ME, TO DIE.... “Cassandra,” The voice was a whisper in my ear, I wasn’t entirely sure it was real or not. I distinguished the sweet, kind voice as my mothers. “Hold on, fight it.” Her voice was so far off, so scarcely audible to me I doubted it was real. I turned my face to where the voice came and expected to see a pale, golden haired, blue eyed woman, but I saw nothing but a boy. “Who…” My voice trailed as I tried to speak, both being from the smoke hazing over my brain and lack of energy. “Hush…” He whispered gently. He picked me up, cautious of my injuries, and walked me out of the fire, out of death coming for me.

“We both know I did what I had to do. You are mine to protect and that’s what I did. I protected you by getting rid of those who had hurt you. I remember you thanking me in your own special way.” His lips turned up in a sneer, turning her stomach. "That was before I came to realize what a monster you really were.” As soon as the words left her mouth, she felt the air leave her lungs and a giant hand was wound around her neck, pressing her against the wall. David bared his long canines at her, snarling and growling loudly. “I am no more a monster than your father is, Cass. You remember that the next time you get in trouble and need someone to bail you out.” He snapped his teeth at her and pulled away, retracting his teeth quickly. “Or the next time you feel like talking at one in the morning. You may have a gun, a badge, and cuffs, but you don’t have a cape. You’re not a superhero, Cass. You’re not invincible. You can still get hurt. You can still die.” “I’ll try to keep that in mind.” She replied, her words coated by sarcasm and defiance. He released her from his grasp and stalked down the hallway, forgoing the elevator for the stairs. Once she was sure he was out of hearing range, Cassidy gasped loudly and reached for her neck, gently placing her fingers on the delicate skin where his hand had just been. She swallowed loudly and felt the slight burn that had taken up residence in her throat. Fuck me, she thought to herself. If these criminals aren’t going to be the end of me, my family surely will be.
