They tell the citizens that they are taking them to 'train' them, but that's all a lie. The first person that was captured was a girl named DerpySinger01, Singer, or Amy. Who found out that another girl was there for 12 years named Aphmau_123_MCD or Jazzy. The next one was a boy named jjweb3323 or James, a very old friend of Singer. Dream has created a new SMP, the First Try SMP. It's a complete and raw experience. They all have tons of fun and leave when the session's over. Or, they TRY to leave. Pain depends on how long he goes into the future Sapnap's headband gives him speed 2 but he can't control how long it is. After 2 minutes he gets slowness 2. Bad's hood gives him flight but he can't go that fast. After he's done he can only jump a slab. So the 4 are just playing a casual manhunt with no powers as Dream stated in the rules.
