I looked around me as I blew on my hands, trying to make them warmer. I didn't know at the time that it would only make my fingers colder in the end.
The street lights slowly came on, one by one, illuminating the sidewalk. The one nearest me blinked on and a pool of light touched my feet. The road was otherwise lifeless and I thought that it would be best if I continued on.
Walking only made my body more exhausted and colder still as I wandered streets. Would it be better to be in a residential area or more public? By myself or with others? Questions I never had to think about flooded my mind and I couldn't come up with an answer for any of them. With sudden realization, I understood that each choice I would make directly affected my survival. I was on my own, no house, no food, no money, no connections. This wasn't a game where there was the option of turning off the console and starting over from the last save point.
As I stared at my surroundings, my brain finally summed up what I had wanted to suppress: this was life or death.
Rather extreme for a person who was newly homeless but it was the truth nonetheless as the cold winter night settled in.
