Chapter One:
Telegram Over-Easy

Lightning streaked across the dreary sky, casting an eerie, blue glow upon the village rooftops of Kandovia. The rain came down in a melody similar to that of a melancholy march. Ms. Rummles smoothed the crisp newspaper pages in her lap and peered over her spectacles toward an approaching customer. He was over 4 ft. tall and had a stomach resembling an under-stuffed flour sack. Mr. Speck, the elderly, mail squirrel, was slow to deliver but a dear soul to the inhabitants of the village. His quaint, old charm and gentle lisp enchanted tots and adults alike, especially during story hour conducted here, in the town library.
"Eh...good afternoon, Mf. Rummlef. Awful pounding on the rooftop though. Mail juft arrived on the noon fifh. Well, let me fee here, thif here if the box of chocolate ftrawberrief that my maw ordered. Thif envelope containf Mayor Ruffle'f new diploma. Ah, here we go, Hilda! A telegram from Mf. Truffle, hope everthing if alright, up in her tree and all."
The little note's color seemed like that of aged, white cheese. Two years had passed since Rummles and Truffle's graduation from Kandovia Merlin Academy. She rarely sent telegrams unless in extreme importance.
