This is a paper I had to write for English 4. I just turned it in today actually. These were the directions for what we had to do Write a two page short tale narrated by a personified object. The narrating object must experience an epiphany, spiritual transformation, or an “Ah ha” moment. As an example of what I'm looking for, I might use a Coke can as my personified object. This Coke can may begin the story by expressing its emotions at having its contents enjoyed only to feel confused when it is tossed out of the car window. It remains abandoned for a period of time on the side of a dusty highway, yet experiences more confusion and loss as it is gathered and thrown into a large garbage bag with dozens of other like cans, all of them sticky and ant ridden. Shortly it is transported and dumped onto a cold concrete floor in a large warehouse with the other cans as it ponders its fate. Bewildered, it is eventually snatched up by gloved hands that cut it into strips and winds the pieces around and glues them to a stick. I would have the can creatively articulate the pain it feels during this process. Still perplexed, the can is then grouped with the other ill-fated cans into a bundle and presented to a smiling young lady. The Coke can then eloquently describes the new sense of contentment as it travels down a path, lined with tearful, yet smiling onlookers (what a groovy hippie-esc wedding, huh?). Eventually, this can realizes that it is now being used in a ceremony that represents enduring love and commitment. This is, of course, the can's "ah ha" moment as it has been transformed into a symbol of affinity and will be forever commemorated in photographs for future generations to see. Now, if I was really creative in my story, I might explore the irony of having first being tossed out as trash only to be tossed away again at the wedding reception into the eager hands of "all the single ladies." You may not use a coke can, cell phone or car.
