Rina is not your typical college student. She is focused on her studies to the point that her best friend has taken it upon herself to make sure she at least has a little fun.

Overall her life is pretty ordinary until she starts to have oddly vivid dreams that don't fade away once she is awake. In her dreams she lives the life of a kitsune named Yuzuki whose life is thrown into turmoil when her mother starts hinting that she needs to leave their family home.

As Yuzuki throws her lot in with Souma, another young kitsune looking to head out on his own, Rina starts to find herself more and more caught up in her dreams. Her obsession continues to grow and threatens to overtake her waking life until disaster strikes and forces her to wake up.

The books make it clear that no one who makes it to the top of the mountain returns, but they go there together for Ise's salvation. The answer to that problem seems to lie in a treacherous creature, a kitsune sentenced to a penance for his deeds: helping them return to the human world. Or at least that's what he says...
