Ang "barang" ay isang uri ng mahika na sinasabing higit-dobleng mas mabagsik kaysa kulam. Ang isang mangkukulam ay walang kapangyarihan laban sa isang mambabarang. Maaari lamang makapaminsala ang isang mangkukulam kung kilala niya ang kanyang biktima ngunit ang mambabarang ay maaaring magdala ng panganib sa kahit na kanino sa pamamagitan lamang nang paghipo o paghawak nito sa mga bagay na may kinalaman sa taong nais niyang saktan o wasakin.
Ayon pa rin sa mga pag-uulat, ang isa pang paraan ng pambabarang ay ang pagtatali ng puting sinulid sa isa sa paa ng insekto. Pakakawalan ng mambabarang ang insekto at pupunta ito sa bahay ng biktima. Kapag nagbalik ito na nagkualy pula ang nakataling sinulid, nagtagumpay itong magawa ang kanyang krimen. Ngunit kapag naging kulay itim ang sinulid, nabigo ang kanyang misyong ipalasap sa biktima ang lupit nang ganti ng mambabarang.
