"Hey Jen! Wait up!!"
I turn around and see Sharleen sprinting towards me, her perfectly curled blonde hair bouncing. I absent-mindedly touch my own hair which was in a tight bun today. Maybe I should wear it down more often.
"What's up?" I ask her. She takes her time chewing her gum before she answers.
"I'm having my 18th birthday party this weekend and," she hands me an invitation, "I wanted you to come." She continues talking while I take the invite and look at it. The envelope is bright pink with a heart sticker on the seel. Sharleen Silver is written on the front in cursive. I shake my head and sigh, typical Sharleen: always one to do things up.
"The party is gonna be from 4 to 9. First hour is a formal dance so dress nice. Second hour is game time so...."
I begin to tune her out. All this information will be on the card so there's no reason to listen to her. She's always so organized. Almost everyone in our...her...clique is. It's a mystery how I ever got into her clique. I mean, everyone in it is beautiful and smart. Yeah, I'm smart but...I'm relatively ordinary. Other than my height and my frankly too-big-to-function breasts, nothing really stands out. I'm not that special; brown eyes and hair, tannish skin and my fair share of scars. Like I said, it's a mystery how I ever got in.
Back to the conversation: "Who else did you invite?" I ask. She bounces and starts listing them off on her fingers.
"Well, there's Shirley, Chris, Stephan, Anita, Gerard, Amber, Arthur, and Derick."
I SWEAR......I stopped breathing. Why would she even invite......
Oblivious to my shock, Sharleen begins waltzing away towards her car with an offhand "See ya."
I continue standing there, staring at nothing. Why would she invite....?
