"Won't you tell me your name?" The young girl pleaded, deep blue eyes desperate for an answer. Dressed in rags, her frail hands shook on the back of his vest, adorned with an abundance of burn wounds and a myriad of scars. "I need to know how to address my hero..."

"We give names to things we hold dear," He replied plainly, turning back only to push away from her grasp, deep brown eyes clouded with a dull, monotonous glint. "That's the worst thing you could do, fall in love. I'll be dead by next week."

"Oh, and one more thing..." He added, taking a single, heavy step. A step that carried seemingly the weight of the world, the souls of a thousand fallen soldiers swimming in the veins of a single leg. "Heroes don't exist."

---

The first time Mira saw him, he was bleeding. A cold night. A flickering streetlamp. He sat on the curb, knuckles split, blood dripping onto the pavement like ink staining a page. She should have walked away. Should have pretended she didn't see him. But she didn't. Instead, she crouched beside him, her voice soft but steady. "Who did this to you?" He laughed-a low, bitter sound. "Does it matter?" Mira didn't know his name yet. But when their eyes met, something inside her recognized him. Not his face. Not his voice. His pain. Because she had the same kind buried in her bones. --- His name was Riven. And trouble followed him like a shadow. He never spoke about his past. Never explained the bruises. Never asked for help. But Mira saw the anger in his fists, the exhaustion in his shoulders. The war he fought every time he looked in the mirror. And despite herself, she stayed. Even when he told her to leave. Even when his darkness bled into her light. Even when she knew-this would destroy her. --- One night, he showed up at her door, drenched in rain, eyes empty. "I did something bad." Mira's breath caught. "What did you do?" Riven didn't answer. He just looked at her, jaw clenched, chest rising and falling like he was trying to breathe through whatever monster was clawing at his ribs. And she knew. It wasn't just a fight this time. It wasn't just another wound to clean up. He had crossed a line. And now, there were only two options-run, or drown with him. Mira should have been afraid. Should have shut the door, called the police, saved herself. But love made people stupid. So she stepped forward, wiped the blood from his cheek, and whispered, "Then we leave. Together." Because blood runs thicker than water. And love? Love was the thing that made you stay-even when you knew it would kill you.

Even in the dark sky of light, I could make out her perfectly carved figure and with a newfound interest, I started to walk behind her. She turned around with a frown marred on her face, "Don't follow me." I grabbed the back of her head and pushed her against the wall, "What are you doing here?" Her violet eyes lit up with a fire, "I don't see how that's your business." Her voice was naturally soft but her tone was harsh. And that ticked me off. Pressing my body against hers, I answered, "You are my business, Rheannon. I own that club." I could feel the rapid rise of her breathing just before she pushed me away, "You own that club, Angelo. Not me." Saying that, she ran away. - Rheannon Aurora Pallas, an excellent nurse who have always outdone her duties, had to leave the hospital she worked at as well as the country she called home. An assassin with secrets. A man with scars. Love was never supposed to be part of the deal. "We can't," he said, his voice rough but final. The rejection was a physical blow. Humiliation, hot and sharp, washed over me, followed immediately by a fury so intense it blurred my vision. I released his jacket like it was on fire, snatching my hand back from his chest. Of course. Of course. I shoved open the van door, the metal screeching in protest. I practically fell out into the garage, needing to put distance between us, needing to breathe air he hadn't just stolen from my lungs. "Thorn-" he began, his voice following me out. I spun around, cutting him off. The words came out laced with a venom I didn't entirely feel, a weapon to match the hurt. "Don't. Just... don't." I was furious. Furious at him for starting it. Furious at him for stopping. But most of all, I was furious at myself. Furious for wanting it. For leaning in. For letting him make me feel, for one stupid second, like I was cared for. When Thorn-an elite assassin with too many secrets-collapses on the doorstep of Ash Penbrook, she expects death, not rescue. Ash is a powerful businessman with his own scars and a vendetta against the same organization Thorn once served. Forced into an uneasy alliance, their world becomes a battlefield of ambushes, betrayals, and buried truths. Survival draws them closer, but trust is dangerous-and love even more so. As enemies close in, both must decide: are they each other's salvation...or the final weapon that will destroy them?
