When the century turns in Zian Cheng, a group of mortal travelers are handpicked by the gods to fulfill their greatest wishes, or be sacrificed to the land. To keep the peace and prosperity, the travelers journey to the temples of the gods in the four corners of Zian and attempt the tasks as a group. Success is possible, though rare. Only a handful have ever completed the tasks. This century, the town of Tai Ma is the chosen place for the four cardinal gods to pick their prophets out of. The unfortunates end up with the short end of the stick. Or perhaps the fortunates. Following the fall of the Chinese empire, the gods ascended into the heavens, and the Dragon Throne, which had served as the tie between the mortal and immortal worlds, sat empty for many decades. The world was far from perfect, but life continued on without the gods. The mythical Jade City-the last refuge for those seeking to practice the old traditions-came to accept that age of the empire and of the gods was over. That is, until Heaven chose the unlikeliest of children as the Heirs to the throne. To save China from an ancient evil so terrible, it almost conquered Heaven, the Heirs must restore the throne and restore the gods. But can they accomplish this task, while simultaneously battling each other for the right to rule that is the Mandate of Heaven? Four have been marked by Heaven, but only one can be emperor.
