{Excerpt from book}
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Matt asked.
“I don’t know,” I shrugged, “a journalist perhaps.”
He raised his eyebrows at me. “Really?”
I shrugged again, taking a sip of my root beer. “Yeah. Why do you ask?”
“I’m just surprised, that’s all. I’ve heard you sing.”
“So?”
“So, you’re really good, Evy. Did you ever think about trying to make it big?”
“No, that’s not for me. You can’t make a career out of singing," I said, quoting my mother.
“If you’re not good, you can’t make a career out of it, but if you have talent, and you do, you totally can.”
“What are you saying? That I should just go for broke and move to Nashville?”
“No,” He took a flyer out of his pocket and slid it across the table to me. “Nashville can wait.”
I looked down at the flyer. In big letters at the top it said “THE FAME” with the silhouette of a girl singing into a microphone on stage in front of an enormous crowd. At the bottom it said, “Calling all musicians to open auditions for the new reality TV series The Fame. Auditions will take place at the Warner Theatre Saturday, April 24th 10:00am-5:00pm. See if you have what it takes to achieve the fame!”
"What do you think?"
“My parents would never let me go to this,” I said, pushing the flyer back across the table.
“Ah, so you're not saying no,” he said.
Elliot Jensen and Elliot Fintry have a lot in common. They share the same name, the same house, the same school, oh and they hate each other but, as they will quickly learn, there is a fine line between love and hate.
