{Excerpt from book} “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Matt asked. “I don’t know,” I shrugged, “a journalist perhaps.” He raised his eyebrows at me. “Really?” I shrugged again, taking a sip of my root beer. “Yeah. Why do you ask?” “I’m just surprised, that’s all. I’ve heard you sing.” “So?” “So, you’re really good, Evy. Did you ever think about trying to make it big?” “No, that’s not for me. You can’t make a career out of singing," I said, quoting my mother. “If you’re not good, you can’t make a career out of it, but if you have talent, and you do, you totally can.” “What are you saying? That I should just go for broke and move to Nashville?” “No,” He took a flyer out of his pocket and slid it across the table to me. “Nashville can wait.” I looked down at the flyer. In big letters at the top it said “THE FAME” with the silhouette of a girl singing into a microphone on stage in front of an enormous crowd. At the bottom it said, “Calling all musicians to open auditions for the new reality TV series The Fame. Auditions will take place at the Warner Theatre Saturday, April 24th 10:00am-5:00pm. See if you have what it takes to achieve the fame!” "What do you think?" “My parents would never let me go to this,” I said, pushing the flyer back across the table. “Ah, so you're not saying no,” he said.

A teen from a racing family must choose between family obligations and the singing career he longs for. *** Mason's parents had a dream. They wanted their sons to race, and as car mechanics, they had spared no expense to ensure their sons were trained to the best of their ability. It was a family dream, and on the side, Mason would sing. After his brother, Haneul passed away, and the future became bleak, Mason had accepted that the only way to seek the light would be to make his parent's dream come true. Giving up his singing was an easy compromise to make; following it through, however, was a much more arduous task. The time he once spared for making Youtube videos and gigging at local pubs was long gone, but he still maintained his secret; he still sang for himself. With first love blooming and friends preparing for their futures, it soon dawns on Mason just how much he is giving up to keep his parents happy. Maybe his parents are asking too much. But when he is forced to return home each day and see his mother become a shell of the person who had raised him, he is reminded of the reasons why he had agreed to carry out his promise. He'll have wasted so much time and effort if he changes his mind now. But when does Mason get to choose his own happiness?
