It was an ordinary morning, sunny and cold in a fall kind of way. Girls were walking around in yoga pants and infinity scarves that swallowed up their necks, giggling with their boyfriends in the hallways of the school or reading. Except for her. She was holed up in the band room, playing as though her life depended on it. The notes rang out from our school's second rate piano, not always perfectly clear, but she made them beautiful. The piece went on, full of purpose and brisk. I couldn't help but stop to listen.
