Most of us are familiar with the idea of an afterlife, and whether or not you believe in it has no importance to this story, because this is about something called the Beforelife.
Before someone is born into our world they spend time in limbo, watching the world they are going to be born into and spending times with their future friends and family. When they are born, they lose all of their memories of the Beforelife. And this is something Matthew will not tolerate, not when the love of his life, Logan, is stuck in the Beforelife for another 700 years.
Matthew bargains for his memories and is determined to find a way to become immortal so he can meet Logan again someday.
