In between the times Mortal Instruments and the Infernal Devices takes place a story of outcast shadowhunters making do in a small Institute in Ireland. When they find out that the murder of all of their parents is connected it will test the binds of their friendships and prove that the worst of things are done in the name of love.

Jace goes to find long-lost fellow sister, Laurel, who has been held captive by Mundanes and Demons who had kept Laurel away from her future as a Shadowhunter. Jace rushes in to save his younger sister: and finds that another long-lost Shadowhunter has beat him to the task: Malik Freedmyn, whom everyone thought had died on Valentine's ship. Before the Nephilim could leave safely though, they get attacked by demons. Jace demands that Clary make a Portal ASAP, but this time, the Portal doesn't look right, but it's die or use the Portal... The Portal transports them to 19th century Victorian England where they meet fellow Nephilim Jem, Will and the warlock Tessa. Together, they combine forces to try to bring down the Magister, who happens to be one of their own?
