Essence... spirit... that which gives meaning to life. It isn't the soul which is necessary for life. Even when a mortal has a soul, without essence... the mortal becomes an empty shell existing for nothing. Our father, he created us pure and perfect. He doesn't want us to soil our bodies and so he never gave us body parts for procreation.
