Sage Maple Emerson is a 16 year old orphan.  She is quiet, thoughtful, and too naive to understand the cruel world around her.  Brought into the world and left on the doorstep of a foster home, Sage not only suffers from abandonment issues, but relies on her sign language and a pen and paper as her use of communication.  Sage is deaf.  She is bullied by the other children not only for being deaf, but for her snow white hair and unusual icy blue eyes.
