Ruby Wickham finds herself in the predicament of a lifetime when the editor-in-chief of the Dunbar High Chronicle abandons her position via email late one night, volunteering Ruby to pick up pieces and keep the paper running. She goes from average journalist to head of the whole operation in two seconds flat, and in addition to newspaper, Ruby also inherits a list of problems as long as her arm, which includes, but is not limited to:

- dealing with the ever-hungover, ever-mysterious Mr. Upchurch (A.K.A. the staff supervisor of the paper who never really supervises much of anything),
- picking through the braincell-slaying student submissions,
- deciphering who exactly is behind the Ask Alice advice column,
- and about a million other insane things that Ruby isn't sure she can do.

So that means now, on top of keeping up her grades and navigating her crumbling home life, Ruby is responsible for a whole team of people who are looking to her for guidance as everything's going to shit.

As if it couldn't any get worse, just as Ruby's settling into her new position as editor-in-chief, she comes across yet another serious complication: the dark-eyed, bright-haired Alex Gaskarth, who just so happens to be the lead singer of the best rock band Dunbar High has to offer.

... He just might end up being the final nail in her coffin.
