Six kids, all extraordinary, all unique. They were all made different, but yet, the same. Then, on top of everything, their lives suck. First they find out that people want to kill them, then they find out their parents had a part of this. So, between hating their lives, hating their parents, hating each other, and faking a couple of things and saving the world their lives are pretty much over. So, can they stop hating each other long enough to save the world? Probably not.

When twins Skylar and Jake were born, their scientist parents used them as an experiment. Each was injected with a dose of serum that would supposedly make them much stronger, smarter, simply better than other kids. But somebody added a chemical that changed the effects of the serum. As a result each twin got only half of the traits they were originally supposed to get. Skylar got the strength and speed while Jake got the brains. When they realized what had happened, the twins' parents immediately put them up for adoption, so neither one knew of the other. 12 years later Skylar is constantly failing all her classes, and Jake is getting bullied because he is so much weaker than other kids. But then Skylar's adoptive family decides to move across the country to find a new school for their daughter, which happens to be the school Jake goes to. They meet completely by accident. Everything started in 2036. The pollution was so bad that the end of the world was predicted to be right around the corner. As complete panic set in around the world, the rich and important people were all gathered and placed on giant spaceships with enough resources and room to house generations of human beings. Before they left though, the government leaders fired As a result, most of the human population died off and earth was a complete wasteland. The little that survived started building local communities and trying to survive in the destroyed excuse of a planet. On the disaster of a planet, creatures mutated and were born out of the nuclear chemicals; creating new species and monsters that hunted humans. While hundreds and hundreds of years passed, the monsters kept evolving and the people kept adapting while still trying to keep a sort of community. They didn't want to lose all of their humanity and become nothing more than animals that hunted the monsters: then they would truly be no better than the monsters themselves. What if they wanted to live a normal life without the unique vision of seeing what the average citizen cannot? What if they cared not to be dragged into a life involving inhumane beings, and just studied for a job they yearned for, for the rest of their life? Unfortunately, wants cannot always be haves, for this young student at Kamome Gakuen cannot escape the life of a person with seeing eyes. Identity crisis? What's that? ---- An earthling's soul was born into an incompatible, human body. Their muscles misbehaved, their skin and body felt like a rigid shell, and their weak constitution left little options for any activities outside of paperwork, books and anything on a screen at home. Then the divine beings tried to correct the mistake and removed the mismatched soul from its unfitting body, slinging it to a distant world with a new body to control. The human flesh-prison replaced with the unlimited options of a shapeshifter, the soul has now a magic-filled world to explore. Grow fur for a mountain hike, grow gills and fins for a deep dive. It's time to catch up on decades worth of missed travels and activities. But who wants to deal with the flesh-craving predators called shapeshifters? Another global purge could start, if the freshly transferred soul shows its abilities too much. ---- The rankings are a mystery to me - especially after this story made it to No. 1 under the shapeshifter tag (and others).
