In the early 22nd century, humanity nearly wiped themselves out with the Waste bombs. These strange and terrifying weapons collapse the Higgs field around them, turning matter into a dangerous sludge rich with "Waste energy". The few survivors learned not only that Waste energy could be shaped by human thoughts, but that it attracted bizarre creatures from beyond the stars called Eldritch, who consume it.
The year is now 2391, and humanity has stumbled back onto its feet. Antonio Jackson, his father Mikolaj Kazanowski-Gohman and his best friend Marcia Ferrum discover a friendly Eldritch feeding off the energy generator in an old ruin. As they take her to the city of New Vienna to register her with New Vienna Eldritch Control, they discover that a serious conflict has been brewing there between the dogmatic transhumanists of Future and the violent bigots of the White Race's Vanguard.
