It's spring, 1987, late in the Cold War, and CIA clandestine operations agent Tracie Tanner is tasked with what should be a relatively simple mission: deliver a secret communique from Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev to U.S. President Ronald Reagan.

After smuggling the document out of East Germany, Tracie believes she is in the clear. She's wrong. A shadowy cabal is work, people who will stop at nothing to prevent the explosive information contained in the letter from reaching the White House.

Soon, Tanner is knee-deep in airplane crashes and murder, paired up with a young Maine air traffic controller and on the run for their lives, unsure who she can trust at CIA, but committed to completing her mission, no matter the cost...

Life has never been the same for Hector Kane since he was ousted from the CIA two years ago. His marriage to the intelligent and beautiful Yubi is unraveling after the death of their only son. His teaching job at an elite university in the Middle East has failed to fulfill him as he had hoped. His heart and mind are still caught up in his adventurous past as a spy. So, when the CIA offers him a chance to return, he accepts without hesitation. This could be his only opportunity to salvage his marriage and live the life he always dreamed of. His mission seems deceptively simple: take his wife and five of his students to a romantic island in the South China Sea. More details will be revealed in Asia. However, once in Asia, things become increasingly bizarre. Hector starts to question the nature of his mission when the CIA instructs him to infect one of his students with a deadly virus. As if that isn't enough, Hector soon receives a call from a Saudi prince claiming that Yubi is a spy for the Chinese government-and that she has seduced and kidnapped the prince's son. Unable to confide in the CIA, Hector is forced to act alone. He must reevaluate his relationship with his wife and rethink everything he believed about his marriage, his mission, and himself. "A knotty and satisfying tale of action, drama, and secrets." - Kirkus Reviews "Engrossing... Hawkes keeps the twists coming... Fans of superior post-Cold War spy fiction will be satisfied." - Publishers Weekly
