Ever since the Burning, casters have been fighting for survival. Their last hope is Redbridge Academy, where the best young casters train to defend against the mutated monsters that attack from the Waste.
    
    Rayne is the perfect candidate for Redbridge, and when she’s selected as a water caster, she’s determined to become a Guardian and fight back against the Waste. She’s clever, she’s disciplined, she’s powerful—but she’s actually a Healer.
    
    Rather than reveal her flesh casting abilities, Rayne chooses to hide her gift in order to stay and train at Redbridge. But when Rayne accidentally heals a wounded friend, she draws the attention of Jay, a rebellious caster who promises to keep her secret—at a cost. Jay is searching for the sun children, the harbingers of the next apocalyptic Burning, and his plan is simple:
    
    FIND THE SUN CHILDREN, AND KILL THEM.
    
    As the race to find the sun children intensifies and attacks from the Waste escalate, Rayne must choose between following her dreams, or joining in the hunt.
