Eighty years after the Witch War resulted in victory over magic, people have long forgotten the heroes of the war: the witch hunters. Living on the fringes of society once again, the hunters continue to fulfill their thankless destined duty. But grudges still run deep for the defeated, and the final score has not been tallied.
Benrick Bayhill rediscovers his missing parents' old hunting clan after a sheltered childhood in his uncle's manor. But duty calls him back, as does his childhood companion, Vinamir Balcren. Together with his new hunter family, Benrick learns the art of witch hunting while uncovering dusty family secrets and closely-kept hunter secrets alike, all while fighting side-by-side with a young half-witch. A hunter's life on the edge requires careful application of trust, but truth is hard to come by with witches on the rise again.
