She's 13 years old. Her mother might as well not even know she exists for all the attention she pays to her. Her only sort-of friend is the 19 year old who lives next door the kids at school tease her. Her teachers hate her.

He's ancient. He lives under the San Antinuo Bridge. He's from Brooklyn, and he has a passion for the Yankees. He served in Vietnam for 4 years, and he came back to New York empty. His friends call him Smackle.

They couldn't be more different, but they have two things in common.
