Sang's enjoying a little alone time at Nathan's, when his father shows up unexpectedly. He toys with her, and makes her break up with the Academy boys when they call. Finally, after being pushed too far, Sang fights back.

Continuing Sang's story from The Patient I and II. Sang's world has changed enormously since her family fell apart. She's taking risks to find her way without them. Will she leave everything behind? Sang, some other minor characters, the six members of the Toma team and the nine members of the Blackbourne team are from CL Stone's Ghost Bird and Scarab Beetle series; this story uses these characters and the idea of the Academy as a launching point.
