I was nothing before I met her. The girl. But it wasn't the fact that she stood there, looking at the pond near the side of the rode with her hands stiff at her sides. It wasn't the fact that no matter how many times the children screamed foul things, she still wouldn't give in, still wouldn't move. No, my dear friend, the fact is that when I walked up to her, she said something that only the wind could catch.

"Are you afraid?"

I looked at her, mesmerized, my voice unable to form words.

"Are you afraid?" She repeated.

I had had time to regain myself.

"Of course not," I said confidently, "I ain't afraid of nothin'."

That was when she moved. She turned to face me, a small frown casting a shadow across her beautiful face.

Her piercing blue eyes bored into mine. It was almost if she could see right into my soul. She could see every memory, every moment in my life. She searched the very depths of my soul, unlocking my secrets.

"Then I'm sorry for you. You need fear. That is the only way you can show courage."

With that, she turned, her eyes flickering to the pond once more. Then she walked away, leaving me in a state of enchantment.
