When they grow up enough to start dating and going through their teenage life. Mila dosen't want Tate to catch feeling because she is starting to fall for the 'school hottie' Evan. When they do end up in a relationship, after a while Evan wants her to stop talking to Tate. (Her only friend since everyone was jealous of her.) She continues the unhealthy relationship because her head has made her believe she is inlove him Evan when in reality its her actual heart which loves Tate. When she expresses her actual feeling to her best friends she gets heart broken again, but remember whats meant to happen will happen in a matter of time. Even if it means years.
