Deka was always taught from a young age that she was a leader; someone of great importance. Her family told her everyday. Well, at least when they came over to see her. Her day was as normal as any other teenager--school, homework, friends, activities--but once a month, she was taken to "conditioning." She was forbidden to tell anyone of her secret home life. Otherwise, something awful would happen and she'd be transferred thousands of miles away to a new home, a new school, a new environment. Deka always knew she was different, but she didn't see how. Her friends didn't take much notice, and neither did her teachers. However, she was always the smart one in her classes. She constantly proved her peers and teachers wrong and seemed to know everything taught in school. When the school board opted to let her skip, her parents declined, insisting it would interfere with her social environment. However, Deka's life was about to change forever the night she found out the truth; the night she realized who she really was....

She had so much faith in him. He was supposed to be a protector, a friend, a shoulder to cry on, the leader of their gang.
