Riza Aetius, the irritable, antisocial, friendless closet-author has had an incredibly suckish life. She was an unwanted orphan, being transferred from foster family to foster family until finally she was just given up on and dumped on the streets at age eight. She grew up on her own, along with her very close friend and guardian, who taught her what she needed to know until they were brutally murdered one day right in front of Riza's eyes. She grew up with violence and death all around her. Fourteen years later, she's living on her own and working full-time at a crappy diner, going home every day to her crappy apartment and her only friends, her black cat, Za, and her white cat, Ri. This is her life until one day, when she comes home to a mysterious stranger lounging on her couch and everything changes.

"How so?" he asked, glancing at her.
"I don't know," she replied, searching for the right words. "You just... have this way of making people feel like they matter. Even here, in this... nightmare."
He was quiet for a moment before responding. "You matter, Y/n. Don't forget that."
