Ela Grant is a 14 year old girl awaiting her birthday tomorrow. All children born in the same year have the same birthday, January 1st. Most birthdays in the city of Haler would be worthy of a celebration, but tomorrow Ela could be chosen.
Ela is from Wing 14. There are 15 Wings and every year, 15, 15 year olds are chosen to compete in the Offering, one from each Wing. This year, it is Ela's turn to face the Council. She prays that her name won't be chosen, everyone knows that only one person can survive the Offering.

Instead of children between the ages of 12 and 18, they make it adults between the ages of 18 to 35. With this change, a woman is selected: Mavery. Mavery's past is quickly brought to the forefront. A truth about a death everyone assumed happened 15 years ago of one of their Champions. She has been alive this whole time, trying to hide from her past that is now forcing its way into everyone's present. She will now have to show everyone the truth and face the consequences of her actions, both past and present. She will be forced to battle with her wits in a Tournament she knows will kill her, and she is almost content with that, content with the fact she can finally rest.
