The village loomed closer and closer, but instead of the usual deathly silence that hung thick in the air when Alexander and Rowan came through, the village was awash with jeering and shouting. Rowan was no more than six yards behind, but it was too far - he needed to stay close to his friend, he did not know how he would react if they were burning her for her 'crimes'.
