Xiomara is a strong feminist Mexican-American with a rough past. She was abused and beat throughout her childhood, she immediately took off at the age of 18 and with success. She was the valedictorian of her high school class, went on to do her undergrad, followed by her graduate in law. She grew up in Long Beach, CA where times were rough but persevered and is now campaigning to become a judge in her current city, Oakland. You learn about her and husband and their experiences. He had a mental illness and as long as he took his medication he was ok. This book incorporates elements of cooking and baking (something which is brought into Xiomara's life through her mother in law) therefor making this a great book for foodies. If your sappy this is also a romance, it contains the beautiful dynamic of a flourishing relationship and even explores the dark sides. This book contains a large amount of characters of Latin descent and involves lots of Latin culture. [The book is written almost 100% in English but at times has some slang Spanish and some spanish dialogue]
