1846: The charmingly beautiful and dangerously smart Sophronia Temminnick, recently finished from Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality, finds herself awaiting to serve her patronage to the Dewan. It's a tense waiting, as she knows the burdens she is soon to bear, but she awaits this sentence in the restorative asylum of Lord Akeldama's London townhouse. But what happens when a recently forgotten Lord Mersey shows up at her doorstep, seeking his own asylum?
    1852: The now prematurely aged yet pleasingly content Sophronia Mersey is enjoying a winter vacation at her spare home in Ramsgate, husband and daughter in tow. Her long-time companion, Dimity Plumleigh-Teignmott-Trizdale, has come to visit, bringing along her own husband. It's a lovely winter season at the reclusive Mersey Manor, yet Sophronia finds herself quite out of touch with most everyone around her.
