1852: The now prematurely aged yet pleasingly content Sophronia Mersey is enjoying a winter vacation at her spare home in Ramsgate, husband and daughter in tow. Her long-time companion, Dimity Plumleigh-Teignmott-Trizdale, has come to visit, bringing along her own husband. It's a lovely winter season at the reclusive Mersey Manor, yet Sophronia finds herself quite out of touch with most everyone around her.
