In King of Anything Elena has a go at Stefan because he doesn’t give her any freedom, and she feels like a dog on a leash. Tired of drama and fighting, she ends things with the broody vampire, and relishes in the prospect of being free by going on a road trip to god-knows-where with the older, sexier and leather clad Salvatore brother.
In White Flag we see the final moments of Season 2, Episode 8, where Damon proclaims his love for Elena and then compels her to forget the admission, using his vampire powers, from Damon’s perspective.
In That Kiss we see Damon and Elena share a few precious moments together at Christmas Party at the Mystic Grill, when Stefan has left. With the right song, the right drink and the right moment (ie: mistletoe above their heads) will Elena finally realise she and Damon have something?
In Let Me Take You There Part 1, Uncle John returns to annoy Elena and Jenna. Having John around and having broken up with Stefan, Elena wants an escape. Damon is more than ready to give her one - and he offers to take her anywhere in the world. Where will Elena chose and what will become of their little "escape"?

Stefan's New Life
It has been four years since Stefan has left Mystic Falls, due to all the drama and life threatening situations. There's also the fact of Elena leaving him for his brother, Damon and while he was rotting in a quarry, dying and drowning over and over again for the past three months, they were living happily together, along with the others. That made him upset, but he put it aside so they can figure out a way to get rid of Silas for good. When they finally did, he left. He left them and the others a letter explaining his leave. We FINALLY have Elena's admission to Damon that she's madly in love with him, so much so that she completely gave up the cure. I just want to forget about the serious things - Bonnie's death, Katherine's transformation (or re-transformation...however you want to look at it!), and the Silas issue. Let's just have some fun and read some heated Delena romance, Delena bantering, and a few real-life problems and small supernatural issues (to create some drama and excitement) they may face in the boarding house during the summer.
