Lyla Hiller can't seem to shake off this feeling of regret. Ever since she was a small child, something never seemed right about her. Maybe it was because she only had three fingers on one hand, or that her right eye had a white, milky look to it. But that regret feeling never wavered. She stole two pieces of candy from Mrs. Gerry's 'One piece only' candy bowl on Halloween in first grade, but that still couldn't possibly make her regret doing it after all these years. Here she is, standing at age twenty-six and works at a run down old library in Midtown, Canada. Her appearance never seemed to concern her and she never really spoke to anyone besides Tabitha, a gray tabby cat that always ran around the library. Mrs. Gerry gave her the job when Lyla was fifteen because she, "felt bad for the poor girl." Despite having only seven fingers and a milky-looking right eye, Lyla was a pretty intelligent woman. She had many offers to top colleges, but turned them down after she found out her mother, Sharon Hiller, was diagnosed with leukemia a few months prior to her forty-sixth birthday. Now, Lyla takes care of her mother and stays cooped up in a dusty old library. One morning while Lyla is dusting some book shelves off the top of the second floor, Tabitha knocks into the ladder, making Lyla wobble and fall with a loud 'THUD'. As she fell, a thick, brown, leather book fell with her. She looked at it closely, never had seen it before. As she picked it up, a searing pain emerged up her arm and she quickly threw it away from her. She clutched her hurting arm and saw she didn't have a scratch. As she looked at the book, confused and horrified, she saw the fading word. WILLOW
