Beatrice (Birdie) Gilman is nineteen and trying to write a book that currently has no title. She has so many thoughts on the world, and people but she doesn't know how to put them onto paper yet. One day she decides to go on a hitchhiking trip to see if it will help her write her book. On her way she discovers new people, and places as well as things about life, and herself that change her view of the world and ultimately helps her in writing her book.
